Biography: Not to be confused with the Japanese heavy metal unit that went by the name Anthem back in the '80s, the Anthem profiled in this bio is a reggae band from Bridgeport, CT. The members of Anthem, which was formed in 1996, are not hardcore purists when it comes to reggae; they prefer a crossover approach to reggae that is comparable to, among others, Caribbean Pulse, Third World, and Steel Pulse. The Connecticut outfit has been greatly influenced by urban contemporary, pop, and adult contemporary, and some of their recordings don't have a reggae beat at all -- at times, Anthem is really providing R&B/pop with a Jamaican vocal style. But some type of Caribbean influence usually asserts itself, and even though Anthem doesn't have a firm all-reggae-all-the-time policy, it's safe to say that reggae (albeit crossover reggae) is their primary focus. Connecticut, of course, isn't the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of reggae; most of the major reggae stars have come from Jamaica and, to a lesser degree, England (home of Aswad, Linton Kwesi Johnson, and Steel Pulse). Nonetheless, the United States does have its share of reggae activity, especially in areas that have attracted a lot of Caribbean immigrants over the years. Anthem, in fact, includes some Jamaican immigrants as well as some musicians who were born and raised in the U.S.; Rob Williams (lead vocals), Donald Rose (keyboards, background vocals), and Courtney "Coozie" Mellers (guitar, background vocals) are among the members who were born in Jamaica. Anthem includes more than one member of the Mellers family; Carey Mellers (keyboards, background vocals) and Jermaine Mellers (bass, background vocals) are nephews of Courtney Mellers (whose non-Anthem activities have included producing material for Sugar Minott, Max Romeo, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and other well-known reggae artists). One of Anthem's U.S.-born members is East Coast drummer Leslie Ming (b. November 17, 1951, Brooklyn, NY), a veteran session player who has backed Evelyn "Champagne" King, Freddie Jackson, Melba Moore, the O'Jays, Randy Crawford, Gladys Knight, and quite a few other major R&B singers. Ming is also a former member of the Brooklyn-based B.T. Express, a '70s/'80s disco-funk band along the lines of Brass Construction, Mass Production, and the Crown Heights Affair; B.T. Express enjoyed several major hits when they were together, including "Do It 'Till You're Satisfied," "Express," "Shout It Out," "Give It What You Got," and "Can't Stop Groovin' Now, Wanna Do It Some More." In 2003, Anthem signed with Mack Avenue Records (which is best known for jazz but has had some non-jazz artists as well) and recorded Are You Ready? Omeil has been singing for most of her life. She began singing in churches and local talent shows at the age of four. Throughout the years, Omeil has struggled to make her family understand this burning passion to perform. Currently Omeil is attending Central High School. Her talent has been exhibited and developed by performing at local talent shows in Jamaica such as the Jamaica Miss McCookspen 2001 and The Jamaica Icesoford Talent Show. At the Hip Hop Palace 2003 Omeil was Awards for "Best New Female Reggae" and "Most Promising Artist". Her genuine performance displays a unique mixture of R&B and Reggae that was influenced by many legends such as Whitney Houston, Aaliyah, Monica, Beenie Man and even closer to her heart, her grandfather who spent a lot of time and energy in her musical development. Omeil is very involved in her musical career. Mature for her age, she voices her opinion quite often but manages to stay humble in spite of her local success. Omeil writes many of her own songs often drawing on personal experience to influence her and seeks to exhibit a positive twist for her generation through her music. Omeil has worked with producers Delion Reid, Sean Todd, Billy the Kid, David McFarlane and Tone Muzik on her debut album "Reggae Sweetheart". These producers have devoted many years to making music. While each producer has their own unique styles, they all demonstrate diversity with their capability to produce Reggae, R&B, Hip-Hop and more. This team has come to together to produce an exceptional display on Omeil's debut album. Their resumes exhibit production work for some of the most respected artists in the industry such as Sean Paul, Beenie Man, Lady Saw, Sanchez, Wyclef and Alicia Keys. Himself a revolutionary, it was his desire to carry on the efforts of the great revolutionaries before him that inspired him to use music as both the medium of and the catalyst for social consciousness and political change. Mutti grew up in Glendevon Hendon, in the city of Montego Bay, Jamaica. Before migrating to the U.S., Mutti worked in Jamaica withthe band called "Rabbonie" which later changed it's name to "Mana." In 1997, he succesfully recorded his first solo album. After getting airplay, the album caught the attention of movie producer, Justin King, who used the title cut, "Righteous Vampire" on the sound track for his 2002 movie "Tommy Hobson." The group feels that hip hop needs to be saved from the repetitiveness and the lack of creativity in musical content. H.u.s.hh will bring hip hop back to its roots, when it was all about the love and fun for the art. Both individuals are multitalented and very focused on where they want to go in life. Not only do they write, but they also Dj, produce their own beats, and sound engineer. As producers Hushh has personally submitted their beats to established artists such as; Rah Digga, Fabolous, G-unit, Slick Rick, Game, Doug E. Fresh, Lil John and the Eastside Boyz, Jadakiss,, Lady Saw, and have also let many unsigned artists rock their beats. H.u.s.hh as artists have many accomplishments. They have performed with Wyclef Jean, freestyled with Method Man., as well as performing a song on The Maury Povich show. They went on The Howard Stern show in March of 2003 and completed a 20 minute interview live on the radio. They have also been in several Ct. newspapers including the Journal Inquirer, Hartford Courant, and Punchline Magazine. In the month of July 2004, the group performed at Club Mumbai in Manhatten owned by hip hop pioneer Kurtis Blow. They were honored to share the stage that night with ODB just months before he passed away. Hushh recently performed at the Funk Flex car show in Hartford Ct along side Jadakiss, Fabolous, Fat Joe, Mirie Ben Airie, and G-Unit. Lastly, they have been keeping a large buzz in the local battle scene through out the northeastern region. Status and Diadems' main goal for their record label (HUSHH Entertainment), is to push a team of artists, dj's, taggers, breakdancers, and producers to their full potential.
